About Museum storage

The Ethnographic Museum’s storage facility at Kačićeva 9/2 was opened to the public on 29 May 2024 and represents the concept of the first open depot in Croatia with an innovative and state-of-the-art museological approach that makes the museum’s collections accessible to the public, as well as providing a look at the museum’s “behind-the-scenes” operations, or how the museum functions.

The collections in the depots are available to the public through guided tours for small groups, with expert guidance and by prior arrangement. This state-of-the-art museological approach makes 54,000 objects available to the public, which were previously completely inaccessible in the previous depots. Likewise, the exceptionally valuable photo archive and museum documentation are available with expert assistance. The museum’s repository promotes openness, accessibility, and transparency in presenting ethnographic collections and conservation practices. Various objects from thirty-six ethnographic museum collections are housed in state-of-the-art metal cabinets, shelving, drawers, and nets across seven depots on three floors. The objects are housed according to material type—wood, ceramics, paintings, metal, and textiles—in controlled and stable climatic conditions with constant humidity control. The depot also serves as a workspace housing two restoration and conservation workshops for textiles and wood, and for metal and ceramics; a space for object photography; museum documentation; four offices for museum curators’ research; and an area for the IT specialist and technician.

The space is accessible to blind and visually impaired individuals, deaf individuals, and people with disabilities. Programs and workshops are organized in collaboration with the community, associations, higher education, and scientific institutions, and are designed for various user groups.
