Permanent exhibition

The permanent exhibition, located in the northern wing of the first floor, displays Croatian traditional costumes from the late 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries, arranged according to cultural areas: Eastern, Central and Northwestern Croatia, Mountainous Croatia and the Adriatic Hinterland, and Coastal Croatia. The exhibition pieces bear witness to the level of textile craftsmanship of a particular area, as well as the social position of their owners (from age to position within the family community). Particularly noteworthy are the picturesque costumes of the northern surroundings of Zagreb made by male semi-professional weavers, the rich linen women’s weaving in the costumes of Croatian Posavina, Slavonian men’s and women’s costumes decorated with srma (goldwork), the costume of a bride from Vrlika who wears a large đerdan necklace decorated with coins as a symbol of a dowry, as well as the linen shirts and headgear from Pag decorated with needle lace, and silk embroidery on the chest of women’s costumes from Konavle in southern Croatia. In addition to the costumes, other items related to everyday life in the predominantly rural areas of Croatia are also exhibited, such as household items, musical instruments, objects related to customs and beliefs (masks, votive offerings), products of traditional crafts such as gingerbread and wooden children’s toys, and the interior of a typical Pannonian house from the beginning of the 20th century is particularly noteworthy.
